Kelleys Island State Park

Kelleys Island State Park, which occupies a large part of the island center, is a delightful recreational haven. The park has a swimming beach, hiking trails, picnic areas and a large, comfortable campground. Fishing and boating in Lake Erie attract many people.

A unique area near the park entrance, The Glacier Groove State Memorial, contains limestone with deep grooves caused by the movement of glaciers. As the glaciers dragged across the limestone surface, embedded rocks and boulders scored the rock.The grooves, over 400 feet long, are surrounded by a walkway. Said to be the world’s largest and most spectacular example of this type of remnant from the ice age, the grooves are remarkable.

Fish and fishing

Kelleys has been called the “Walleye Capital of the World” and the large number of anglers and fishing boats attests to the popularity of the sport. Check with the locals to find the best fishing spots. If you don’t have luck, you can still enjoy a fish dinner at one of the local restaurants. We had great perch at the Village Pump, an unpretentious watering hole in the main dock area. If you’re not in the mood for fancy food, try a pizza at the Caddy Shack.
