Fort Myers Beach
Fort Myers Beach, Florida on Estero Island is a popular family resort. While crowded and traffic-choked during the prime winter months (February and March), it is more laid back at other times. The nerve center for young people is the "Times Square" area, which sports shops, restaurants and such nightlife as the island offers. There is a large public beach here, but the entire island is a beach and there are a number of public beach access paths up and down the main road, Estero Blvd.
At the north end of the island is Bowditch park, a lovely place to fish, watch the local ospreys or just relax. The park is has limited parking so it is best to arrive early in the day.
Fort Myers Beach has many hotels and condo rentals to choose from. My wife and I stayed at Casa Playa, a lovely, pet-friendly place within walking distance of Bowditch park. The beachfront here is uncrowded and invites strolling and surf fishing among the gentle waves. Casa Playa is just the right distance from Times Square; close enough to take advantage of its benefits and far enough from to avoid the noise.
We enjoyed kayaking in Estero Bay while we stayed here. Other nearby places to explore are Lovers Key State Park, Sanibel and Captiva Islands and Koreshan State Park.
